Why Getting Kids Outside Matters for Eye Health

Children who spend at least two hours a day outdoors have a lower risk of developing nearsightedness.
As an eye care professional – and a mom of two girls – I am uniquely aware of how important it is for children to spend time outdoors.
Research continues to show that kids who spend at least two hours a day outside have a lower risk of developing nearsightedness, also known as myopia. Natural light and time spent focusing at a distance both appear to slow the elongation of the eye that drives myopia progression.
If your child is already nearsighted, outdoor time works best alongside a myopia management plan. Ask us about MiSight contact lenses, orthokeratology, and low-dose atropine at your next visit.
